Construction machines work under extreme conditions. Stone crushers, excavators, wheel loaders and their attachments are constantly exposed to impacts, vibration and abrasive material. Sooner or later, cracks, wear or worn bearing seats appear. A new part is often expensive and not available straight away – and every day of downtime costs extra. In many cases, a proper weld repair can get the machine working again quickly.
Typical damage
- Cracks in attachments, buckets, shovels and mountings, often starting at welds or notches.
- Wear on cutting edges, teeth, wear plates and crusher components caused by abrasive material.
- Worn pin and bearing seats that lead to play and further damage.
- Fractures after overload or material fatigue.
Repair or replace?
Whether a repair pays off depends on the part, the material and the type of damage. Wear parts and many attachments can be repaired well, often with additional wear protection through hardfacing. Safety-relevant and load-bearing parts, on the other hand, are subject to special requirements: the manufacturer’s specifications apply, and if in doubt the repair should be agreed with the manufacturer or an expert.
How a proper repair is done
- Assessment: record the damage, find the cause, identify the material.
- Cleaning and exposing: remove oil, dirt and paint so the damage is fully visible.
- Removing the crack: gouge or grind the crack down to its root and check that it has been completely removed – for example with dye penetrant testing.
- Preheating: many high-strength and wear-resistant steels must be preheated before welding to avoid new cracks.
- Welding: weld in layers with a filler metal that matches the material.
- Post-treatment and inspection: controlled cooling, grinding or machining, and a final check.
Why experience matters
Construction machines are often made of high-strength or wear-resistant steels. Welded without suitable preheating or with the wrong filler metal, new cracks quickly form right next to the repair. A good weld repair therefore starts with assessing the material correctly and only ends with a clean final inspection.
Advantages of a weld repair
- Shorter downtime than waiting for a new part.
- In many cases lower costs than replacement.
- The chance to reinforce wear-prone areas at the same time.
